The Suzuki Method

“Every child is talented. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.”

– Dr. Shinichi Suzuki

Philosophy

“Every child can.”

The Suzuki philosophy reframes the idea of “talent” as a natural aptitude that some children have and some do not.  Rather, a child’s “talent” is the natural capability of and openness to learning when exposed to optimal learning conditions and home environments.  It is most important to remember that every child, when instructed in a nurturing, encouraging environment, can reach their full potential.

The Mother Tongue

Dr. Suzuki referred to the Suzuki method as the “Mother Tongue” method after observing Japanese children effortlessly speak their native language.  He was struck by the fact that, without any obvious training, children were able to speak fluently by age five or six.  In the Suzuki Method, musical “immersion” is encouraged before birth and continues throughout their education by listening to recordings, attending workshops, and learning primarily by ear.

The Suzuki Triangle

“A child develops exactly in the way he is taught.”

In the Suzuki Method, the “Suzuki Triangle” refers to the relationship between teacher, parent, and child.  In the very early stages of learning, the trained Suzuki teacher provides a welcoming, nurturing environment in which a solid technical and musical foundation is built.  The Suzuki teacher also teaches the parent to teach the child, so that good progress can continue between lessons.

Practicing at home

“Practice only as many times as you have breakfast.”

There is no progress without diligent practice.  With positive encouragement, enthusiasm for process, and loving instruction, practicing at home can transform into a special bonding time between parent and child.  Engaging, fun and creative repetition is essential to successful practicing.
